Great Effort
Wednesday, March 16, 2011
Petros Chrysochos continued his good run of form from Amos Mansdorf 1 into the second tournament in Israel reaching the semi finals. Here he was drawn against the European number 3 seed Or Ram-Hatel. Petros looked a little tired on court, with the previous 9 matches catching up with him. He lost 6-0 6-1. He had his chances but against the European number 3, he needed to be on top form. When asked about the match he said ‘I’m not that disappointed. I’ve had a great two weeks here in Israel and had great support from people back home, the team here and my coach. I wish I could have won two titles to take back home, but it wasn’t to be today.’
Later on during the day Petros and his doubles partner Kostantinos Ioannides won the doubles title in a truly high tempo doubles match against home favourites and champions of Amos Mansdorf 1 Yehonatan Kaufman and Mazor Noam. They won 6-2 6-2, with both players playing like they had something to prove after their disappointing doubles display in Amos Mansdorf 1 where they lost in the 1st round.
Also playing a doubles final in the second tournament was Mara Argyriou, partnered by Israel’s Valeria Nikolaev, but they came up short losing 6-1 7-6. The second set was a truly tense affair as Mara and Valeria were 5-2 40-0 down, and saved all 4 match points to eventually take the match to a tie break. Unfortunately their Russian opponents, Daria Lodikova and Anna Yakovleva, proved too strong for Mara and Valeria. Petros, Kostantinos and Mara are a great advert for Cyprus Tennis and we should all be proud of what they have achieved these past two weeks in israel.
