A Rising Star
Saturday, March 12, 2011
Nicolas Campbell – the little guy with a big heart – held off tough competition to win the first tournament of the season, the Cytanet National Junior Tournament, held at the National Tennis Centre in Nicosia.
Nicolas, seeded three in the tournament, made light work of his opponents up until the semi-finals where he faced the hard hitting and dangerous Antonis Andreas Avraam. The two players had previously met at the Interclub Tournament Final between Herodotou Tennis Academy and Famagusta Tennis Club. Antonis won that match in straight sets. It wasn’t to be the case this time, with Nicolas winning the match in three sets and booking his place in the final where he faced Eleftherios Neos.
Nicolas and Eleftherios, two bright young talents in Cyprus tennis, although still in the under 12’s category, have a long and fierce rivalry, and their matches bring out the best tennis from both players. Nicolas was victorious this time beating Eleftherios in straight sets 7-6(3), 6-2 to take home the winners trophy. Congratulations Nicolas!
Some of our other players also did well in the tournament. Danos Papapostolou reached the quarterfinals of the under 14’s draw losing to the eventual winner of the tournament. Danos also reached two doubles finals but was runner up in both, partnered by Xenios Mavroudis. Kseniya Kamenskikh won the girls doubles U16 with Anna Savchenko by walkover.
